Gold Coin Celebrating Marija Jurić Zagorka Unveiled

The Croatian National Bank, in partnership with the Croatian Mint, is continuing its literary coin series by honoring Marija Jurić Zagorka, a pivotal figure in Croatian literature and feminism. While she is a celebrated icon in Croatia, her recognition remains limited outside the country’s borders. This lack of awareness is unfortunate, as her life story exemplifies the significant role that educated women played in shaping cultural narratives during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Until recently, Zagorka’s contributions had not received extensive academic attention, but a resurgence of interest is finally bringing her legacy to light.

A New Era for Croatian Literature

This upcoming coin series marks the second installment dedicated to pivotal authors in Croatian literature, following the fairy-tale writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. The Croatian National Bank is issuing a gold coin valued at 100 Euros and a silver coin worth 4 Euros, both of which pay tribute to Zagorka, who is renowned for her historical novels.

Marija Jurić Zagorka: A Trailblazer

Born in 1873 to a prosperous landowner, Marija Jurić Zagorka was one of four siblings. Driven by an intellectual curiosity that transcended her noble status, she sought higher education, a desire that was ultimately thwarted by societal expectations. Her mother suggested she marry a Hungarian civil servant, which initially seemed a viable escape. At just 19, she wed a man 17 years older, but the marriage quickly became strained due to familial pressures and conflicting political beliefs. As a proud Croatian, Zagorka found it difficult to reconcile her identity with her husband’s pro-Magyar views, leading to escalating tensions.

A Courageous Escape and Career Launch

By 1895, the situation became unbearable for Zagorka, prompting her to leave her husband and pursue a divorce, aided by her father’s support. This decision came at a high cost; she forfeited her dowry and faced financial independence. Undeterred, she carved out a niche for herself as a journalist and author, focusing on national identity through her writing. Emulating Henryk Sienkiewicz, she employed historical fiction to instill a sense of Croatian nationalism in her readers, though her work was often dismissed as inferior compared to her male counterparts, even as Sienkiewicz received a Nobel Prize.

Legacy of a Bestselling Author

Despite the skepticism of critics, Marija Jurić Zagorka achieved extraordinary popularity, particularly with her series “The Witch of Grič,” which garnered a cult following. Choosing to write in Croatian, she made a lasting impact on the development of the Croatian language, which had predominantly been an oral tradition. Throughout her writings, Zagorka championed gender equality, a legacy that continues to resonate today. She passed away in Zagreb on November 30, 1957, leaving behind a remarkable literary legacy.

Design Elements of the New Coins

The coins feature a unified design, crafted by artist Jelena Mavrić Varga. The front side presents a bust of Zagorka in contemporary attire, gazing to the right, accompanied by her name and the year 2025. The reverse side depicts the iconic Lotrščak Tower from Zagreb, a significant landmark in her novel “The Witch of Grič,” adorned with ornamental graphics. The coin also displays the inscriptions “Republika – Hrvatska,” along with the respective denominations of 4 Euros and 100 Euros.

Availability and Pricing

The coins are set to be available for purchase starting April 24, 2025, directly from the Croatian Mint’s online store. Prices will fluctuate daily in accordance with the current market value of precious metals, with additional VAT applied based on the buyer’s shipping location.
